The Importance of Play
We are focusing on “play” during the month of July and asked a few of our Thread alumnae to share more about how they engage in play through hobbies.
RAECHEL PETERS: WEIGHT LIFTING
What is it about this hobby that pulled you in?
Solitude, lol, but seriously… From the moment I wake up to the moment I put my little guy to bed every day, I am inundated in conversation. I love having an hour when I can be with myself, throw my phone on DND, and exercise with an epic playlist.
Tell us why having a hobby at this stage of your life and your career is so important to you?
It’s very important to me to remain an active, healthy mom for my family. I knew I needed to do something intentional to offset the stress and mental load of my career. I also needed to invest in my physical health. I used to love running, but it doesn’t really fit into my schedule like it once did. So, I hired a personal trainer to teach me how to use the gym and now I can fit in a great workout over my lunch break with only a rinse-off & dry shampoo required!
TAWNY VO: GARDENING
What is it about this hobby that pulled you in?
After having kids, I really needed a hobby! Gardening is something that my daughters could also help with and learn from. The aspect of planting a seed and getting a beautiful bouquet of flowers or home-grown vegetables to enjoy with dinner is so rewarding. I also find a lot of peace when I am working in my garden. My mind shuts off and its just me and my garden. It is my therapy! I also love to give my family, friends, and co-workers bouquets and that just makes a girl feel good to give!

Having a hobby at this stage of my life and career is so important because it’s helped me learn more about myself internally. It’s made me realize that I am more than just a mother or the Marketing lady at Dondlinger (ha!) Having a hobby has also challenged me in ways that I might not get at work or as a mother. I’ve planted a lot of seeds and sometimes the end result is not what I wanted but it’s a journey and a learning experience. I think it’s also important to exercise your mind to stay sharp – working other parts of your brain can help you in other areas of your life such as work, household, and motherhood.
BRITTANY ENGLE: CONCERTS
What is it about this hobby that pulled you in?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. I would spend hours listening to music growing up and my mom took me to my first concert in 6th grade (Alien Ant Farm – ha!). I love everything about live music. There is something so powerful about a venue full of people that are all so different, but there together to enjoy the same thing.

I love having things to look forward to and concerts are such an easy date night. Or a fun excuse to travel! Life can get busy and stressful and it’s important to make time for things that bring you joy. That’s always been music for me and I appreciate so much the ability to see so many of my favorite bands live.
