5 Books to Read in 2023

Our team compiled a small list of recommended reads to inspire you as you begin your new year:

Audra

“I set a goal to read 24 books this year and only hit 20 (or 21 if you count re-reading Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone with my six-year-old, but I’m not a fan of odd numbers so I’m calling it 20). It is hard to choose just one, but one that I found myself recommending to many women this year is Burn Out: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski, Ph.D. and Amelia Nagoski, D.M.A. What I liked about this book is I learned so much about how to care for myself; I walked away with tools that I actually applied to my life and turned into habits. This book is full of research and gives language to some of the things that we as women uniquely experience. "

“My favorite book from this year was Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo. I read this book at a pivotal time in my life where I was contemplating many changes. This book allowed me to take a step back and look at my goals and understand what was most important to me.  And, the best part was it helped me realize the actions I could take to reach what I had listed as key goals. This is a book I will pick up and read every year.”

“My favorite read this year was Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser. Her writing further helped me lean into discomfort and imperfection instead of avoiding them at all costs. This book complimented Dare to Lead well as I learned to identify core values and use them as a compass in both my professional and personal roles. I highlighted so many quotes by Elizabeth, but here is one of my favorites:

"We get the chance, over and over again, to turn and face our difficulties...and to ask them, 'What have you come to teach me? How can I use this situation to become wiser, braver, kinder, stronger? What can I learn about myself and my choices and reactions? How do I find the light shining through the cracks?"

Our Thread Alumnae Book Club read How Women Rise: The 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion or Job by Sally Helgesen & Marshall Goldsmith and Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. As a team, we would highly recommend both of them. Specifically, Dare to Lead was at the top of all of our individual lists this year in addition to the ones we shared!
